The bugle is one of the simplest brass instruments, normally having no valves or other pitch-altering devices.  All pitch control is done by varying the player's embouchure.  Extensively used by the military, a bugle call is a short tune, originating as a military signal announcing scheduled and certain non-scheduled events on a military installation, battlefield, or ship.
The M1892 field trumpet (bugle) is the design on which most modern bugles are based.  The M1892 bugles are pitched in the key of G which is lower than the modern B flat trumpet, making it easier to sound all the notes.  The M1892 was used by the U.S. military, Boy and Girl Scouts, drum and bugle corps, fraternal and paramilitary organizations as the standard bugle for sounding calls.
